Chapter Twelve

The room was large and comfortable. It included a fireplace with a brightly burning fire, a double bed with a beautifully crafted ebony headboard, a single bed with silk pillows and a huge polished copper bath tub that looked like it might have belonged to a king. Carpets across the stone floor were lush and red with golden chord intricately woven around all edges and elaborate wicker shutters at each window made the room feel even more important, as if privacy and protection were paramount here.

The tavern had its reputation to uphold and it had not failed in that regard. Any other time, Damien would have been satisfied with the accommodation. Yet, it felt somewhat empty and cold.

The bath water was still hot when he rose from the tub and began to dry himself. Even though it was early morning when most people would be asleep, the tavern had no trouble supplying the services of a warm meal and hot water. They’d even provided chamomile oil to scent the bath water. But it lacked something, the loving touch of Camille. Gold could buy comfort but it could not buy the joys of companionship and devotion.

With nothing but a large towel wrapped around his waist, droplets of water still clinging to his hair and cleanly shaven jaw, Damien poured himself a goblet of wine and sat on the armchair next to the large fireplace, one leg swung over the arm. He took a sip and smiled at the thought of Camille blushing, finding him like this. His vampire always looked striking in the firelight, even though fire was the one element that could mean the end of his kind. His smile faded as he reflected on Camille’s visit to his mother’s.

There was something about his family that made Damien feel uneasy, made him feel that Camille should keep his distance. It wasn’t that he feared Camille would one day choose them over his company, though that thought had crossed his mind before. It was more of an instinct, a hunch that he could not fully explain. He took another swig of wine and pondered the situation. It was unfortunate that Camille overheard the rumor regarding his family. But he did and Damien knew his vampire would be riddled with guilt and miserable with worry over his mother until he visited her and could lay his troubles to rest. The sooner the visit happened, the better. If Damien knew anything about human nature, it was that the familial bond could never be easily disregarded as far as most men were concerned, even though many of his own contracts were sealed by bickering families. He finished the glass. It seemed true enough even with a vampire who still had the memories of a man.

Damien poured himself another glass. The wine was full bodied and rich in both color and taste. It was one of the few pleasures he savored. Letting the bitter sweet fluid wash over his thoughts and suppress his fears, he gazed into the dancing flames.
